WHAT SCENARIOS MEAN TO E-LEARNING.

E-Learning is a learning system that involves teaching with the help of electronic resources like phones, laptops, the internet, computers, etc. As a learning system, the ultimate goal of E-Learning is to pass on knowledge and effect permanent change in the learner.

Companies, schools, professionals, who use E-Learning as their primary means of learning, have been proven to be a few steps ahead of their counterparts.

A scenario is a postulated sequence of possible events. Where e-learning is involved, scenario-based courses use real-life situations to pass across the message of the content.

The importance of scenarios in E-Learning cannot be underestimated, overlooked, or emphasized because they immediately and effectively increase the level of interactivity in the course and challenge the learner into relating what he or she is learning with day-to-day activities.

So what exactly do scenarios mean to E-Learning? An attempt is being made by this article to answer such an ocean-wide question.

Scenarios give meaning to the course at hand. They show the learner real experiences and connect them to the course instantaneously.

Scenarios give the learner time to think, observe, and explore the course.

Being exposed to real-life situations through well-scripted scenarios motivates the learner to want to learn more and effect the lessons learned from the course.

The ultimate goal of scenarios in e-learning is to enhance the learning experience, make it a memorable one, and ensure that a permanent and effective change takes place in the learner.

For perspective, if one were to create a scenario for a Psychology course on the four temperaments, focusing on the Phlegmatic and sanguine, and each of their reactions to the same situation, this is how it would go;

“Phil needed to call his friend Sam, not because he missed him, but because the lack of water in town had gotten to him, and he need to replace the ones his family had used up. He need to go back to his coffee and newspaper, the stress did not go well with his person at all! Someone needed to do something about the situation, but that person would be his brother, Cameron, and his bubbly, overly excited, overly dramatic best friend, Sam, mainly because Phil could never act where his presence was not specifically requested for. Sam, on the other hand, did not even fully understand the situation like Phil and Cameron, but he was just happy to have an excuse to put off the large of work that he had piled up due to procrastination and disorganization. One of his many admirers had gotten him all the water he needed for the week, and he was sure that even if the situation continued, he would not lack water in any way, so the situation on the ground only bothered him because it bothered others, he was breezing through it.”

Engaged yet? What can you deduce from the scenario? If you were a Psychology student, would you be interested in fully studying these characters and their different reactions to various real-life situations?

That is the power of scenarios in E-Learning.
